Toddler-friendly activities can be difficult to find amongst COVID. With some creative thinking, simple materials from around the house can be utilized for a fun craft activity that will take up… ummm … at least 30 minutes of the day! That’s if you’re like me and have a 1 & 3-year-old, haha!
A few tips for entertaining kids at home, believe it or not, kids love structure. So, if you start each week off with a theme it will help you narrow down activities to plan for the kids. Selecting a themed week will help reinforce the lesson you are trying to teach, as well as give the kids and yourself a focus! Start the day after breakfast with a story or two about your theme, in our case it would be, “dinosaurs”. Next, find an age-appropriate video about the topic and let the kids watch it. I typically like choosing music-based videos. Here are some of our favorite toddler learning videos about dinosaurs:
3.Learn to count with Dinosaurs
4.Disney’s Gigantasaurs – Learn the Dinosaur Names
5.Learn about Dinosaurs – 30mins
While the kids are enjoying the video, set up your activity! Today, we are making a Stegosauraous our of paper plates. See below for the step by step directions. My best advice to creating a structure to your day/week is to be as flexible as possible. Give yourself grace, even though you have planned activities throughout the day it’s ok to have a day of play and chaos, we’re all social distancing and this time… no matter how frustrating it may seem you will never get back just to slow down and enjoy your kids. Without further adieu, see below for the dinosaur craft!
Here is what you will need:
1. Paper Plates
2. Scissors
3. Glue
5. Marker
Directions:
1. Depending on how old your child is, you can either copy this template on to your paper plate for your kids or you can have them draw it on their own.
2. Once your template is drawn, paint the paper plate! Feel free to be creative
3. Allow your stegosaurus plate to dry and cut out all the pieces.
4. Glue the pieces on the backside of the plate according to where each piece goes.
5. Voila! Your stegosaurus is complete! I hope you guys have a ROARrring good time with this craft and that your toddlers love creating something fun and different.
