“Never have I ever… taken a pregnancy test”, would’ve been a great line to say at a college pregame in the midst a game of king’s cup. Since the fact was, I had never taken a pregnancy test before; It came as quite a surprise to me that there are more options, types, and brands of pregnancy tests than there are options for cough medicines!
I woke up one morning with a gut instinct that I was pregnant, I didn’t feel any different than I did any other day, but for some reason, on this particular day, I was almost sure I was pregnant. What was the first thing I did? I “googled it” of course, I’d like to think that any normal person would have. According to Google, I wasn’t showing any of the signs or symptoms that a pregnant woman would have, so being the smarty that I am, I brushed it under the rug. Over the next few days, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I might be pregnant, so I went to Walgreens to if I was seeing if my inclination was right. All of a sudden, a calm panic consumed me, I was literally like a lost puppy walking down the tampons/condoms/pregnancy test aisle at the store; an aisle that I’ve been well versed with since I started getting periods 1000 years ago (not really 1000 years ago but sure feels like it!).
Staring at a wall of pregnancy tests was so daunting, which one did I need to get? My first instinct was just to grab whichever test I had recognized first from commercials but, as I kept looking I noticed there were SO many other choices and they did all sorts of things. Some of the tests claimed to have immediate results, others had lines, others had colors, then there was a whole section with stuff that had plus’s and minus’s, and of course, I can’t leave out the section of digital tests. Basically, if you are already in a slight state of panic since um… you might be pregnant…this section of the store will surely put you down a path of “…Holy …Shit, I might be pregnant!”.
I grabbed two different brands of pregnancy tests just to “make sure”, I ended up picking up a box of the First Response Rapid Response pregnancy test which came with two tests inside, as well as the Accuclear Early Pregnancy Test. After following the directions of what seemed like a science experiment, 2 out of the 4 tests confirmed that I was pregnant & the other two tests gave me a blurred response! I knew, at that moment that I was pregnant. Fast forward to a week later, when I showed my husband the tests, he of course was a huge skeptic and had to find out for himself. He kept asking, “Was that one line or two lines? Is a faint line considered a line?”, so we went to Walgreens where he in turn was overwhelmed by all the options available & and we picked up 3 more different boxes of pregnancy tests. At this point, you’re probably thinking… these people are crazy, just need to come to terms with the fact that you’re pregnant already! None the less, I knew my husband was just like me, and he needed to see for himself! We took all of the pregnancy tests, 5 more in total, some of them worked and others didn’t but All in all, we came to the same result, WERE HAVING A BABY! – OF course, my husband needed to be absolutely, positively sure, so we made an appointment with my OB & my Regular doctor just to get medical confirmation. LOL. HEY, at that point we basically knew! WE’RE having a baby!
